Supporting Educational Participation for Students who use AAC in Regular Classrooms
Pat Mirenda, Ph.D.
Friday, November 4, 2005
Toronto

Dr. Pat Mirenda presented this workshop to 150 participants, including resource teachers, classroom teachers, educational assistants, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, communicative disorders assistants, and parents on November 4, 2005. She focused on academic inclusion for all students and demonstrated how students can meaningfully participate at different levels (competitive, active, involved) in the activities of the classroom. Dr. Mirenda introduced the concept of universal design for learning as a foundation for curriculum planning and demonstrated how students who require a variety of accommodations and modifications can be included in the classroom activities through multilevel programming and/or using the context of the classroom activity to meet a student's IEP goals.
Dr. Mirenda challenged participants to reflect on their current practice and service models. Participants were inspired by her passion about inclusion and many commented that the workshop transformed their way of thinking about programming for students who use AAC.
