Password protection of files/folders using Macintosh OS X's Disk Utility program |
Follow these instructions to password protect any number of files/folders on a Macintosh running OS X:
Open Applications/Disk Utility and click "New Image". Name your disk image, select where you want it to be saved, choose the desired size and select "Encryption: AES-128". Disk Utility will ask you for a password to protect your new disk image. Don’t add the password to your Keychain, or you won’t be prompted to enter it when you double-click the image (.dmg) file.
When you want to access your sensitive/private files, double-click the disk image and enter your password when prompted. The image will be mounted on the desktop like any other removable media. Drag the mounted image to the trash to “eject” it when you are finished with it.
