About the Team

Project Coordinator: Barbara Collier

Barbara is the executive director of ACCPC. She has worked for over 25 years in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as a speech language pathologist and clinical educator.


Instructor: Deb Parent

Deb has more than 15 years experience working with diverse communities throughout the city in the creation of empowering options for peoples’ safety. She has extensive experience adapting self defence programs to reflect the specific needs of people.


Instructor: Jolene Casella

Jolene has worked with people who use AAC for the past 12 Years at West Park Healthcare Centre in Toronto. She has provided a leisure based, self-directed computer service in her role as Coordinator, Client Computer Services, in addition to clinical, technical and training support to the AAC Clinic's clinicians and clients in her role as Client Computer Specialist. For several years, Jolene has also provided communication instruction to participants of Temple Universities ACES Program, in Philidelphia, during their two week immersion component.


AAC User Advisor: Al Sunisloe

Al, our Hamilton team member, has cerebral palsy and uses a word board to communicate with and a walker for mobility. Now a middle-aged man, Al has experienced trips on his own to Florida, among other places. Last year, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies from McMaster University. Al enjoys his computer, bicycle, and Bible study.


AAC User Advisor: Aaron Shelbourne

Aaron uses AAC. He is an advisor on the Speak Up Project.


Project Evaluator: Donna McGhie-Richmond

Donna is a special educator with over 25 years experience. She has worked in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for the past 15 years. She has taught pre-service and graduate students at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto and currently teaches pre-service students at The University of Alberta. She has been involved in numerous research projects related to teaching students who have special learning needs. She is a Research Associate on the Supporting Effective Teaching project at OISE/UT, investigating teacher variables related to student learning outcomes. She was the Evaluator for the Speak Up Project, a project that addressed safeguarding for individuals who use AAC. She has presented at national and international conferences and has developed numerous workshops for parents, educators, and other professionals. Her primary areas of interest include inclusive education, adaptive instruction, and teacher education.


Web Master: Paul Janzen

Paul is an Assistive Technology Consultant who has worked for more than 12 years in the field of AAC technologies. He is the web master for ACCPC, Speak Up and Early Literacy.
