Susie has worked for over 15 years in the field of augmentative and alternative
communication with the Bloorview MacMillan Children’s Centre. She
also provides training to school teams as one of Bridges-Canada’s
training specialists. In 1997, she was a consultant of AAC Service Development
and Training with the Ontario Ministry of Health’s Assistive Devices
Program. Susie has delivered presentations and workshops on a variety
of AAC topics both locally and internationally. She teaches an AAC module
to Occupational Therapy students at the University of Toronto. She has
been involved in research relating to computer access and to the inclusion
of students in education programs. She is co-author of “Communicate”
a communication software module and Home Study Guide for adults.
Project Administrator
Barbara Collier, SLP
Barbara has worked for over 25 years in augmentative and alternative
communication (AAC) as a speech language pathologist with the Bloorview
MacMillan Children’s Centre and as director of the Adult Adaptive
Communication Service. In 1997, she was senior consultant of AAC Service
Development and Training with the Ontario Ministry of Health’s Assistive
Devices Program. Barbara has presented many papers, courses and workshops
on a range of AAC issues. She is an invited speaker at national and international
conferences and is the recipient of a number of service awards for her
work in the field of AAC. She is the author of: “See What We Say
– Situational Vocabulary for Adults who use AAC”, “Communicating
Matters: A Videotape Training Guide for Personal Attendants Working with
Consumers Who Have Enhanced Communication Needs” and “Communicate”
a communication software module and Home Study Guide for adults. Barbara
is the Executive Director of ACCPC. She has extensive experience working
in the field of AAC as a clinician and in designing and managing AAC related
projects.
Project Evaluator
Donna McGhie-Richmond, PhD.
Donna is a special educator with over 25 years experience.
She has worked in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication
(AAC) for the past 15 years. She has taught pre-service and graduate students
at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of
Toronto and currently teaches pre-service students at The University of
Alberta. She has been involved in numerous research projects related to
teaching students who have special learning needs. She is a Research Associate
on the Supporting Effective Teaching project at OISE/UT, investigating
teacher variables related to student learning outcomes. She was the Evaluator
for the Speak Up Project, a project that addressed safeguarding for individuals
who use AAC. She has presented at national and international conferences
and has developed numerous workshops for parents, educators, and other
professionals. Her primary areas of interest include inclusive education,
adaptive instruction, and teacher education.
Eric Goldberg M.Sc., M.B.A. Director of Client Services, KidsAbility
Eric has worked with KidsAbility for 15 years. He coordinates client
programs which have supported an expanded range of services to the
community, focusing on early identification, early intervention and
extensive community partnerships. His previous work experience has
included regional health care planning and basic research in the field of
developmental biology.
Cynthia Wass, B.A (Ed); B. Sp. Ed
Cynthia is an educator with over 25 years experience, primarily
in the field of special education. She has worked with children with physical disabilities for the past 14 years and in the field of augmentative
communication for the past 3 years. Of particular interest to Cynthia is the literacy of students who use AAC. Cynthia has taught special education
courses for the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto. In addition, she has delivered numerous presentations
to teachers and educational assistants about children with disabilities
and the implications of the disabilities for learning.
Nancy Crenna, MA SLP
Nancy has over 12 years experience as a Speech and Language Pathologist. She has worked in the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for the past 3 years with the KidsAbility Centre for Child Development. She is an instructor with Conestoga College in the Educational Assistant Program and the Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy Aide Program. She has delivered presentations about AAC and related speech and language learning issues at various local venues such as parent groups, lectures, workshops and conferences.
