Start up a Communication Assistant Program

It is important to know that there is currently no government funding for communication assistant services for people who use AAC. You may wish to contact local organizations and accessibility committees to request funded AAC communication assistant supports.

If your disability organization, independent living centre and/or AAC clinic is interested in starting a communication assistant service, ACCPC can provide consultation and services relating to:

• A service delivery model
• Recruiting potential communication assistants
• Training curriculum in best practices for communication assistants:
• Part 1: Communicating with a person who uses AAC
• Part 2: Supporting communication between a person who uses AAC and a third party
• Training for people who use AAC around using and directing a communication assistant
