Maximizing the Literacy Skills of Individuals Who Require Augmentative and Alternative Communication

There were over 140 participants at the workshop. The workshop presented effective evidence-based practices for interventions to maximize the literacy skills of individuals who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The workshop focused on instruction in phonological awareness skills (e.g., sound blending, phoneme segmentation), vocabulary knowledge, letter-sound correspondences, decoding, shared reading of connected texts, early writing skills, and more advanced reading comprehension and writing skills.
Through this workshop, participants learned to:
- Describe the importance of literacy skills for individuals who require AAC
- Identify factors that affect literacy outcomes for individuals who require AAC
- Design and implement evidence-based instruction to improve reading and writing skills for individuals who require AAC
Evaluate literacy skills of individuals who require AAC.
