Sample Educational Topics for AAC users
Human Rights and the Justice System

Speak Up Project 2004

Adults who use AAC tell us that they want information, vocabulary and support in communicating and learning about the following topics:

  • Human Rights
  • Recognizing dignity and respect
  • Cultivating a sense of entitlement in oneself and in others
  • Recognizing violations of rights and dignities
  • What to do in cases of abuse/violations of rights
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Assertive language using AAC
  • Negotiation skills
  • The complaint process, options and consequences
  • The justice system – police, crowns, judges, victim services etc.

Vocabulary in pictures and symbols and support in learning this vocabulary should be addressed in order to ensure that people have the tools to communicate about these topics.
