Educational Needs of People who Support Youth who Use AAC in the Areas of Sexuality and Disability, Communication and Safeguarding

Speak Up Project 2004

Parents, educators, service providers and sexual health educators have different educational needs. They may require different components from the following topics:

  1. Sexuality and Disability:
    • What, when and how to support youth in learning about sexuality and specifically sexual health and disability.

  2. Communication:
    • Communication Disabilities
    • Impact of communication disabilities on sexuality and safeguarding
    • AAC systems available
    • Need for communication facilitation/interpretation
    • Working with an AAC user
    • How to communicate with an AAC user
    • Introducing vocabulary and strategies for supporting communication about sexuality and safeguarding

  3. Supporting youth in learning about personal safety.
    • Living and service provider contexts
    • Promoting self confidence and dignity in youth
    • Knowing about the safety concerns for AAC users
    • Access to tools and resources to support youth in developing safety skills
