Communication directions for requesting assistance in using a condom

Assistance with a condom:

Adapted and used with permission from:

  • The Niagara Centre for Community Living
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention Manual

The following instructions may be used by AAC users in directing a person when providing assisting in the use of a condom.

Tell me:

  • What does it say on the package?
  • Is it lubricated?
  • Does it contain spermicide?
  • What is the expiratory date?
  • Please use these instructions to put it on me.

How To Use A Condom

  1. Open the package carefully to remove the condom. If the condom is torn or rips, throw it away.

  2. Pinch the tip to squeeze out the air.

Make sure it is rolling the right way before putting it on my penis.

There is pre-ejaculate on the tip of the penis which must not touch the outside of the condom.

If this happens, throw the condom away and start over.

  3. Once the penis is hard, put the condom on. Be sure to squeeze the tip of the condom and let out any air before rolling it down.

  4. Roll the condom down onto the hard penis right to the end. There should be an empty flap of latex at the tip.

  5. After sex take off the condom.

  6. Make sure no semen spills out as you take off the condom.

  7. Throw away the condom.
