Safeguarding People who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
from Sexual Abuse/Victimization

Welcome

The Speak Up project ended Dec. 2004.

This site is maintained by Augmentative Communication Community Partnerships-Canada (ACCPC)

Speak Up is about ending the silences that prevent people who use alternative ways to communicate from protecting themselves from sexual abuse. It is about giving people with complex communication needs the information, education and means to communicate about healthy sexuality and sexual abuse.

Speak Up is about supporting family members, guardians, caregivers, health care professionals, counselors, justice system officials and educators in their efforts to reduce the risk of sexual abuse.

Some people have complex communication needs associated with a range of physical, sensory and environmental causes that restrict/limit their ability to participate independently in society. They and their communication partners may benefit from using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods either temporarily or permanently. AAC systems include picture or letter boards, computers and voice output communication devices.

Browsing Tip: Due to the extensive number of resources on this site, we recommend that you visit the Site Map (upper left corner of every page). The Site Map lists all the available resources at a glance.

The Anne Johnston Health Station/Speak Up gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, which receives annually $100 million in government funding generated through Ontario's charity casino initiative.
