Speak Up 2003

This display contains assertive communication strategies that can be used by AAC users to indicate what they want done in situations of conflict. The display prompts the AAC user to define the problem (e.g. When you...), communicate the consequence of the problem (e.g. I feel...), states that he/she wants a change (e.g. I need you to stop doing that), and provides a consequence in the event that change does not occur (e.g. If it happens again I will...)

Example of use:

Nick felt humiliated after an encounter with a receptionist in a service agency. She dismissed his attempts at communicating with her and asked him to find someone who could help him communicate. Nick took some time to think about his options in handling this situation. He returned with preprogrammed messages - "When you speak to me like that, I feel you are treating me like a child. I need you to take the time to read my messages. Can you do that?" The receptionist apologized. Nick left the office with the information he had wanted earlier.
