Communication Assistants: A Model for Communication Access
People who use AAC often experience communication challenges when interacting with people in their communities. They may require someone who understands how they communicate to assist them in communicating with unfamiliar people. In 2007, ACCPC conducted a pilot project that explored how people can use trained communication assistants to increase their communication and participation in their communities.
In Canada, there is a legal right to communication supports. People who are deaf or deafblind have communication supports. People who use AAC do not. Findings from this project show that trained AAC communication assistants can play a major role in providing equitable services for people who use AAC.
