Board of Directors
Hazel Self - Chair
Hazel Self has been involved with disability issues and the development
of services for 22 years. She has quadriplegia and uses attendant services.
Ms. Self has served on several boards of directors including the Cheshire
Homes Foundation, Clarendon Foundation, the Hugh MacMillan Centre and
is currently the president of the Centre for Independent Living in Toronto.
She is the coordinator of community services at the Gage Transition to
Independent Living, a community-based program of West Park Healthcare
Centre in Toronto.
Al Cook, Ph.D.
Dr. Albert Cook is Professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and Special Advisor to the Provost at the University of Alberta. He served as Dean of the Faculty from 1994 to 2007, and chair of the health Sciences Council from 2000-2007. Dr. Cook has worked with interdisciplinary teams to develop assistive devices and to assess the effectiveness of technology being used by persons with disabilities. Dr. Cook is also associated with the I CAN Centre the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. He was formerly Professor of Biomedical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento where he established the graduate program in biomedical engineering and directed it for 12 years. He also served as Co-Director of the Assistive Device Center in Sacramento, California, helping over 500 persons with disabilities to identify and obtain assistive technologies. Dr. Cook is Past-President and Fellow of RESNA, a major professional society for assistive technology practitioners in North America. He has also served in national united States positions in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. Dr. Cook is a registered professional engineer (electrical) in California.
Sue Lantz, BA (Hon.), M.P.A.
Ms. Sue Lantz is an independent consultant specializing in organizational
development, program planning and government policy development. Ms. Lantz
has over 20 years experience in her field and has developed specialized
expertise in health care policy research, grant evaluation and public
education initiatives.
Fiona Crichton (Treasurer)
Fiona Crichton has over 20 years of accounting experience including both private and public practice. Fiona recently joined Luminato as the accounting manager. Prior to that, she was the Controller/Accountant of a marketing services company for over 10 years. Fiona developed accounting policies and practices as the only professional staff employed. Fiona also has ten years experience in public accounting, working in the small business/owner managed division. Fiona became a Chartered Accountant in 1989 after graduating from Queens University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Commerce, Honours.
She has a high degree of proficiency in accounting systems and has excellent analytical skills, involving the use of excel. She also has excellent communication and interpersonal skills obtained from working in different environments as well as working on time sensitive projects.
Elise Nakelsky
Elise Nakelsky is crown counsel with the Crown Law Office - Criminal of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General. She is responsible for the review of crown brief materials, prior to their production in civil actions, to ensure the public interest is protected. Prior to this, she worked as an assistant crown attorney for seven years, prosecuting criminal cases. In 2001 she successfully prosecuted a sexual abuse case involving a complainant who used AC. Following her involvement in that matter, Elise was a committee member for the Speak Up: Safeguarding People who use AAC from Sexual Abuse Victimization Project.
Melinda Rundle
Melinda (Min) Rundle lives in a group home in Vancouver. She uses augmentative
and alternative communication. She took sociology and English courses
at the college level and enjoyed learning about equality issues, especially
those pertaining to differently-abled people.
