Board of Directors
Hazel Self - Chair
Hazel Self has been involved with disability issues and the development
of services for 22 years. She has quadriplegia and uses attendant services.
Ms. Self has served on several boards of directors including the Cheshire
Homes Foundation, Clarendon Foundation, the Hugh MacMillan Centre and
is currently the president of the Centre for Independent Living in Toronto.
She is the coordinator of community services at the Gage Transition to
Independent Living, a community-based program of West Park Healthcare
Centre in Toronto.
Al Cook, Ph.D.
Dr. Albert Cook is Professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and Special Advisor to the Provost at the University of Alberta. He served as Dean of the Faculty from 1994 to 2007, and chair of the health Sciences Council from 2000-2007. Dr. Cook has worked with interdisciplinary teams to develop assistive devices and to assess the effectiveness of technology being used by persons with disabilities. Dr. Cook is also associated with the I CAN Centre the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. He was formerly Professor of Biomedical Engineering at California State University, Sacramento where he established the graduate program in biomedical engineering and directed it for 12 years. He also served as Co-Director of the Assistive Device Center in Sacramento, California, helping over 500 persons with disabilities to identify and obtain assistive technologies. Dr. Cook is Past-President and Fellow of RESNA, a major professional society for assistive technology practitioners in North America. He has also served in national united States positions in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, the American Society for Engineering Education, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation. Dr. Cook is a registered professional engineer (electrical) in California.
Fiona Crichton (Treasurer)
Fiona Crichton has over 20 years of accounting experience including both private
and public practice. Fiona works at Luminato Arts Festival as the accounting
manager. Prior to that, she was the Controller/Accountant of a marketing
services company for over 10 years. Fiona developed accounting policies and
practices as the only professional staff employed. Fiona also has ten years
experience in public accounting, working in the small business/owner managed
division. Fiona became a Chartered Accountant in 1989 after graduating from
Queens University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Commerce, Honours.
Melinda Rundle
Melinda (Min) Rundle lives in a group home in Vancouver. She uses augmentative and alternative communication. She took sociology and English courses at the college level and enjoyed learning about equality issues, especially those pertaining to differently-abled people.
Peggy Corrigan-Dench
Peggy has worked in the social service field for over 30 years as a consultant
with Regional Support Associates, where she provided support to people
with intellectual disabilities in the South West Region of Ontario. Peggy has
assisted organizations to develop policy and procedures to focus on the rights
of individuals to live in situations free from abuse. She has authored and
presented on a wide range of topics relating to abuse prevention and serves on
the Freedom from Harm Working Committee for Community Living Ontario.
Joanna Birenbaum
Joanna is legal director of the Women's Legal Education and Action Fund
(LEAF). She is involved in all aspects of LEAF's legal work and advocacy,
including policy and research, submissions to federal and provincial governments
on law and policy, media releases and interviews, communications materials
and preparation of written legal argument, community relations, education and
outreach.
Harpreet Bassi
Harpreet Bassi is the Director of Strategic Projects at Health Quality Ontario
where she is responsible for the design, development and execution of a
number of initiatives including, strategic and business planning, developing and
overseeing a project management office, and supporting the organization's key
projects. Previous to this, Harpreet held various leadership positions within
the health sector, including Director - Public Affairs Planning and Stakeholders
Relations at Cancer Care Ontario and Senior Advisor to a former Ontario Minister
of Health. In addition to her ten years experience in health, Harpreet has a
professional background in planning, public affairs, communications, stakeholder
relations, and change & issues management. Harpreet holds a Masters of Public
Administration, specializing in health policy, from Queen's University and an
undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto.
